If you are researching HGV training costs in South Yorkshire, you have probably noticed that prices vary significantly between providers and that many websites are not transparent about what is and is not included. This article gives you a realistic breakdown of every cost involved in getting a Class 2 (Cat C) HGV licence, with figures that reflect what candidates in Sheffield and Rotherham are actually paying in 2026.

The Full Cost Breakdown

D4 Medical Examination — £50 to £120

Before you can apply for an HGV provisional licence, you need to pass a Group 2 medical examination with a registered doctor. The examination covers eyesight, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and other DVLA criteria. Private clinics in Sheffield typically charge £60 to £100.

Provisional Licence Application — £43

Once you have your completed D4 form, you apply to the DVLA for a provisional HGV entitlement using Form D2. Online applications cost £43; postal applications cost £58. Allow three to four weeks for processing — this is often the longest wait in the entire process.

Theory Test — £26

The HGV theory test consists of a multiple choice section (100 questions, 85/100 to pass) and a hazard perception section. The fee is £26. Two to three weeks of focused study using the official DVSA revision materials is typically enough.

CPC Module 2 (Case Studies) — £23

The Driver CPC is a legal requirement for professional HGV drivers. Module 2 is the written case study element and costs £23. It can be sat on the same day as the theory test to save time.

Practical Training — £1,440 to £1,600

This is the largest component of the cost. A standard Class 2 course at Go Big runs over four to five consecutive days of one-to-one instruction on real Sheffield roads. One-to-one training is significantly more efficient than group training: you are driving the whole time, not waiting for others. Beware providers advertising very low day rates — check how many days are included and whether the DVSA test fee is covered.

CPC Module 4 — Included at Go Big

Module 4 is a practical vehicle safety assessment with a DVSA examiner covering tyres, lights, brakes, load security, and emergency equipment (approximately 30 minutes). Go Big is a DVSA-approved CPC Module 4 test centre, so candidates complete this on-site at our Sheffield base. The fee is included in our course packages.

DVSA Practical Driving Test — Included at Go Big

The DVSA test at Sheffield Handsworth consists of an off-road manoeuvre and an on-road drive of approximately 60 minutes. DVSA test fees are included in Go Big course packages.

Why Costs Vary Between Providers

  • Training days included: a cheaper headline price may mean fewer days — and fewer days means a higher risk of failing the test
  • Group vs one-to-one: group courses cost less per head but you spend more time watching than driving
  • Test fees: some providers charge the DVSA test fee separately; at Go Big it is included
  • CPC Module 4: most schools require a separate booking at a DVSA centre; at Go Big it is on-site and included
  • Pass rates: a school with a 75% first-time pass rate represents better value even at a higher upfront cost
