One of the first questions people ask when considering HGV training is how long the whole thing takes. The honest answer is six to ten weeks from start to licence for most candidates in South Yorkshire — though the speed depends largely on how quickly you move through the pre-training steps, not on the training itself.

The Stages and Their Timelines

Stage 1: D4 Medical — 1 to 2 weeks

Book a Group 2 medical with a GP or private clinic. Appointments are usually available within a week. The examination itself takes 20 to 30 minutes. Once complete, you have the D4 form needed for your provisional licence application.

Do not wait until the medical is done before moving to Stage 2. Book the medical and start studying for your theory test at the same time.

Stage 2: DVLA Provisional Licence Application — 3 to 4 weeks

Submit Form D2 and your completed D4 to the DVLA. Online applications cost £43. The DVLA processing time is the single longest wait in the process — typically three to four weeks. Apply as early as possible. Use this time to complete your theory preparation.

Stage 3: Theory Test and CPC Module 2 — 1 to 2 weeks (once provisional arrives)

Once your provisional entitlement arrives, book your HGV theory test. Most candidates sit the theory test within one to two weeks of their provisional arriving. Many sit CPC Module 2 (case studies) on the same day to keep things efficient. Combined test fees: £49.

Stage 4: Practical Training — 4 to 5 consecutive days

At Go Big, Class 2 practical training runs over four to five consecutive days. You begin with cab familiarisation and vehicle checks, progress through manoeuvring exercises and road driving, and finish with your DVSA test on the final day. One-to-one training means every hour is spent behind the wheel — no waiting for others.

Stage 5: CPC Module 4 — Same week as training

Go Big is a DVSA-approved CPC Module 4 test centre. The practical safety demonstration is conducted on-site at our Sheffield S9 base during your training week. No separate appointment or travel required.

Stage 6: Licence Issued

After passing your practical test, your new HGV entitlement is added to your driving licence and your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) is issued. Both arrive by post within one to two weeks.

Typical Timeline: 6 to 10 Weeks Total

Stage Typical duration
D4 medical booked and completed 1 to 2 weeks
DVLA provisional licence processing 3 to 4 weeks
Theory test and CPC Module 2 1 to 2 weeks
Practical training and DVSA test 1 week (4 to 5 days)
Licence issued 1 to 2 weeks
Total from start to licence 6 to 10 weeks

What Can Slow It Down?

  • Delaying the DVLA application: people who wait until after passing the theory test to apply for their provisional add weeks to their timeline unnecessarily. Apply as soon as your D4 is done.
  • DVSA test slot availability: through Go Big’s trainer booking facility we have access to short-notice test slots, which keeps things moving. General public slots at Sheffield Handsworth can be several weeks out.
  • Failing the theory test: a fail means rebooking and waiting again. Most candidates who prepare properly pass first time.
  • Health issues flagged at the D4: most people pass with no issues, but if the DVLA requires further information about a condition, this can delay the provisional licence.

Can You Do It Faster?

The minimum realistic timeline is around five to six weeks for a very motivated candidate who applies to the DVLA immediately, passes the theory test at the first opportunity, and books training to follow directly. The DVLA processing time is the main constraint — you cannot hurry it.
