Why the Price Varies

HGV training is not a single product. It’s a sequence of steps — medical, provisional application, theory, practical training, and tests — each with its own fee, and not all providers include everything in one package.

The variables that affect your total cost most are:

  • Whether you already have any large vehicle experience (experienced drivers need fewer training hours)
  • Whether the course includes CPC modules (some providers list prices without CPC — always check)
  • Whether pass protection is included (this covers you for additional training if you don’t pass first time)
  • Whether finance is available (spreading the cost changes the upfront figure considerably)

The Full Cost Breakdown:

D4 Medical Examination: £50 to £120

Before you can apply for your provisional HGV entitlement, you need a D4 medical from a registered doctor. The examination covers eyesight, blood pressure, heart health, and a few other checks. It takes about 20–30 minutes and can be done at a private medical provider or, in some cases, your own GP.

Provisional Licence Application — £43

Once you have your completed D4 form, you apply to the DVLA for a provisional HGV entitlement using Form D2. The fee is £43 online (£58 by post). Allow three to four weeks for DVLA to process it — this is usually the slowest part of the whole process.

HGV Theory Test — £26

The theory test covers two parts: 100 multiple choice questions (pass mark 85/100) and a hazard perception video test (pass mark 67/100). Both are sat on the same day.

Most candidates study for two to four weeks beforehand using the official DVSA revision app and practice papers.

CPC Module 2 (Case Studies) — £23

If you are training to drive professionally, you need the Driver CPC qualification. Module 2 is the second theory element — a written case study paper based on real-world driving scenarios. It can be sat on the same day as the theory test.

Practical Training — £1,440 to £1,600

This is the largest single cost. A typical Class 2 training course requires around 18 to 20 hours of practical instruction, delivered over four to five consecutive days with a qualified instructor.

At Go Big Driving School in Sheffield, training is delivered one-to-one on roads local to S9 — including the routes used for the actual DVSA test. You train in modern rigid vehicles and practise all elements of the test: vehicle safety checks, reversing manoeuvres, and road driving.

CPC Module 4 (Practical Safety Demonstration) — included at Go Big

Module 4 is a 30-minute practical assessment where you demonstrate vehicle safety checks to an examiner — a structured walkaround of a stationary lorry, identifying tyre condition, lights, brakes, emergency equipment, and so on.

Go Big is a DVSA-approved CPC Module 4 test centre, which means you take this assessment on-site at our Sheffield training base, not at a separate venue. There is no additional travel, no separate appointment, and no waiting for an external booking slot. Some training providers charge separately for Module 4 or ask you to arrange it yourself — at Go Big, it is handled as part of your training.

DVSA Practical Test — £155

The practical driving test takes place at Sheffield Handsworth HGV Driving Test Centre and consists of an off-road reverse manoeuvre and an approximately 60-minute on-road drive.

Go Big has access to short-notice DVSA test slots, which means you can often get through the full process faster than the standard waiting times suggest.

Is It Worth the Investment?

A Class 2 HGV licence opens up a substantial number of driving jobs in South Yorkshire. There are currently over 240 HGV driver vacancies within 20 miles of Sheffield, with typical salaries running from £34,000 to £42,000 for Class 2 roles — and higher for nights, specialist work, or once you upgrade to Class 1.
