The Group 2 medical is your first step. Most people pass without difficulty. We will tell you honestly what to expect.
Before you can apply for your HGV provisional licence, you need a Group 2 medical. For most people it is a formality. For some it raises questions about existing health conditions or medication. Either way, we handle the coordination. We point you to the right provider, tell you what to expect, and make sure this step does not slow down your journey.
Call Dan on 0114 357 0000The external problem is procedural: without a completed D4 form from an approved medical examination, the DVLA will not issue an HGV provisional licence. You cannot begin the formal training process until it is done.
The internal problem is anxiety. People worry about health conditions that might disqualify them. Conditions that are managed and stable. Medication that is controlled. Things that feel significant but often are not disqualifying for Group 2. That worry keeps people from even starting the enquiry.
The deeper problem is that a lot of potentially good HGV drivers talk themselves out of training before speaking to anyone who actually knows the rules. The honest answer is often more reassuring than people expect.
You cannot get a provisional without the D4 form
The medical must happen first. Nothing can move forward until the D4 is submitted to DVLA.
You are not sure your health will pass
Managed conditions, medication, past diagnoses. Many of these are not disqualifying. But without advice, the uncertainty stops people starting.
You do not know where to get the medical
Not every GP offers D4 medicals. Dan can point you to approved providers in the Sheffield area.
We have helped students with a wide range of health situations start and complete their HGV training. Dan will tell you honestly what the DVLA standards say and whether your situation is likely to be an issue. He will not tell you what you want to hear. He will tell you what is accurate.
Diabetes managed by diet
Usually no barrier. Tell the examining doctor the full picture.
Insulin-treated diabetes
Requires specific DVLA assessment. Not an automatic disqualification.
Controlled blood pressure
Typically not an issue. Medication usually acceptable.
Treated sleep apnoea
May be fine with the right documentation. Worth a call to Dan first.
Corrected vision
Glasses and contact lenses are fine. The standard is meeting the Group 2 vision requirement.
Previous mental health treatment
Assessed individually. Many people with a history pass without issue.

Hearing
Blood pressure and heart health

Diabetes and blood sugar management

Before you book anything, call Dan. He will go through your situation, answer your questions about health conditions, and tell you what to expect from the examination. If there are any likely issues, better to know before you pay for the medical.

Dan can refer you to approved Group 2 medical providers in the Sheffield area. The examination covers eyesight, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and other DVLA criteria. Bring your driving licence. The doctor completes the D4 form.
Typically arranged within 1 to 2 weeks
Once you have the completed D4, you submit it with your provisional licence application (D2 form) to DVLA. Dan walks you through the application. Allow three to four weeks for the provisional to come through. Your training journey has begun.
Provisional arrives in 2 to 4 weeks
The only cost of calling Dan to find out is five minutes. The cost of not calling is every week you spend not progressing towards the career you want.
Another year without starting because of a worry that a call would have resolved
Booking the medical without preparation and discovering an avoidable issue on the day
Paying for a medical with a provider who does not specialise in Group 2 assessments
Once the medical is passed and the D4 is with DVLA, the provisional licence is coming. Your theory preparation can begin. The training week is getting closer. The career change that has been a plan is now a process.
The medical is the only thing you cannot start without. Once it is done, everything else can move.
You called Dan. You got straight answers. You found out you were eligible. The thing that felt like a barrier was not.
