How Long Does It Take to Get a Category C/Class 2 HGV Licence?

The Short Version

The Category C/Class 2 HGV licence application can take a while. If you want a rough timeline before reading further:

• Fastest realistic (everything falls into place): 3–4 weeks
• Typical (no major delays): 6–10 weeks
• With DVLA delays or test availability issues: 12–16 weeks

The stage that catches most people out is not the training itself — it is the DVLA provisional licence application, which can take three to four weeks to process. Everything else is largely within your control.

Stage by Stage: What Takes How Long

Stage 1: D4 Medical — 1 to 3 days to book, 20–30 minutes for the appointment

Your first step is booking a D4 medical examination with a registered doctor. Private medical providers in Sheffield and Rotherham often have appointments available within a few days. Your own GP can also do it, but NHS appointments can take longer to arrange.

Book this as early as possible — you cannot apply for your provisional licence without the completed form.

Time at this stage: typically less than a week if you use a private provider

Stage 2: DVLA Provisional Licence Application — 3 to 4 weeks

This is where most people lose time. Once you post or submit your D2 and D4 forms to the DVLA, you have to wait for them to process your application and add the provisional HGV entitlement to your licence.

The DVLA cannot be chased to speed this up. The best approach is to submit the forms as soon as your medical is done, then use the waiting time productively.

What to do while you wait: Start studying for your theory test. The DVSA revision app covers the HGV multiple choice questions and hazard perception clips. Most candidates need two to four weeks of studying to feel confident — which lines up almost exactly with the DVLA wait. If you start studying the day you post your forms, you can be ready to book your theory test the moment your provisional licence arrives.

Time at this stage: 3 to 4 weeks (cannot be shortened)

Stage 3: Theory Test and CPC Module 2 – 1 to 3 weeks to prepare, 1 day to sit

Once your provisional licence arrives, you can book the HGV theory test and CPC Module 2. Both can be sat on the same day at the same test centre.

The theory test consists of 100 multiple choice questions (pass mark 85/100) and a hazard perception test (pass mark 67/100). Module 2 is a written case study paper. Test centre availability in Sheffield is generally good, with slots usually available within one to two weeks of booking.

Time at this stage: 1 to 2 weeks from provisional licence to sitting the test (if you’ve been studying during Stage 2)

Stage 4: Practical HGV Driver Training — 4 to 5 consecutive days

This is the part most people think of when they imagine HGV driver training — actually driving the lorry.

At Go Big Driving School, a Class 2 (Cat C) course typically runs over four to five consecutive days. Training is one-to-one with a DVSA-approved instructor and covers everything you need for the practical test: cab checks, vehicle safety, manoeuvring, and road driving on local Sheffield routes.

There is no minimum waiting period between passing your theory and starting practical training – you can book the moment your theory passes come through.

Time at this stage: 4 to 5 days

Stage 5: CPC Module 4 – done on-site at Go Big, no additional waiting

Module 4 is a 30-minute practical safety demonstration with a DVSA examiner — a structured walkaround of the lorry where you identify safety checks and answer questions about the vehicle.

Because Go Big is a DVSA-approved CPC Module 4 test centre, this takes place at our Sheffield training base as part of your course. You do not need to arrange a separate appointment at an external venue or wait for an additional booking. This removes a step that can add days or even weeks to the process if you are training with a school that does not have in-house testing.

Time at this stage: included within your training days

Stage 6: DVSA Practical Driving Test — booked through Go Big’s trainer facility

The final test takes place at Sheffield Handsworth HGV Driving Test Centre. It involves an off-road reverse manoeuvre and an on-road drive of approximately 60 minutes.

Standard DVSA test waiting times vary, but through Go Big’s trainer booking facility we have access to short-notice test slots. This can save weeks compared to booking through the standard public system. In practical terms, it means your test can often be scheduled within a few days of completing your training rather than waiting weeks for a standard appointment.

Time at this stage: as little as 1 to 3 days after training if a short-notice slot is available

Can You Do It Even Faster?

In theory, yes. If you apply for your provisional licence immediately after your medical, study hard during the DVLA wait, sit your theory tests the moment the provisional arrives, book training straight away, and get a short-notice test — the whole process can be done in as little as four weeks.

This requires everything to line up, including test centre availability, but it does happen — particularly for candidates who come in well-prepared and progress quickly through training.

• Theory test preparation — candidates who underestimate the theory and fail the first time add two to four weeks while they rebook and restudy
